Wrestling Rocks to Reinforce Riprap
On Saturday, 30 April, Gerry Bergeron
of G. M. Bergeron Construction donated stones for use on the rail trail and even
volunteered to transport them to the Quag bridge in Sterling. Gerry met
Greenways volunteers at his construction project to collect rocks for the
Sterling Quag bridge. John Grote, Bob Pezzini and Ed Yaglou rolled angular
building stones from Bergeron's pile into the front end loader. Gerry Bergeron
and his son operated their front end loader to lift the rock into their dump
truck, then drove to the Quag bridge to dump the rock. John Grote and Steve
Kelly have volunteered to complete the stonework there to properly support the
west side of the trail and stabilize the gravel slope.

A Culvert is under construction to divert water from one side of the Sterling Rail Trail to the other.

Rail Trail Clearing in Rutland
Wachusett Greenways trail volunteers
began clearing trees from the rail bed in Rutland between Barrack Hill Road and
Whitehall (Rutland State Park entrance) road on April 30. Four chain saws were
operated by Rocky Goodreau, Craig Miller, Linwood Erskine and Tom Pitman. They
made great progress in clearing the path. Pat Charbonneau and Stan Miller
stacked brush and wood for future chipping. Pat and Stan are hoping for more
volunteers for brush handling at the next trail work day.

Exploring the Poutwater Pond
Biologist Bill Johansen led a group on April 24 to explore the rare bog habitat on Poutwater Pond near the Holden/Sterling line.
