December 1, 2001

Greenways volunteers rented a wood chipper to grind up the large piles of tree branches which have accumulated from several months of clearing on the Springdale Mill site. To our surprise, the daytime temperature reached a record 72 degrees for this date but nobody complained. The crew worked from 7 or 8 AM to late afternoon with about 15 volunteers on hand. Dave Kaplan provided the snacks and lunch. The site is looking much better and we are able to view the area without these obstructions. Some logs remain to be carted away. Anyone need some wood?

This is a photo of the Springdale Mill flume after the trees and brush was removed. The flume carried water from the dam to the mill for power. There is still much work to be done but now we can see what the area looks like. Planning meetings are ongoing to develop this historical site into a public interpretive viewing area. The site is adjacent to the Mass Central Rail Trail now under development.
