Storytellers Invited for Family Fun Day at the Mass Central Rail Trail Wachusett Greenways will offer a series of Narrative Study Workshops with Katie Green. Participants from age 10 thru adult are welcome to join six workshops between May 12 and June 14. The workshops will be held at the Oakdale Methodist Church on Route 140 in West Boylston at the time most convenient to participants. Workshop members will create and present a story about the railroad. These stories will be told in the voice of a character related to the rail road. The stories might be told from the point of view of characters as conductors, porters, hoboes, travelers, or presidents. Master story teller, Katie Green will provide materials, and participants are encouraged to bring additional resources about rail roads that they may have. Narrative studies enhance fluency and self confidence in any and every future vocation. Developing stories from history can be fun and educational. Participants should be curious, imaginative, and interested in people, their stories, and their experiences. Participants should be interested in being an effective or persuasive communicator. Experience in the performing arts is helpful, but not necessary. Worskshop members should bring a notebook, a writing tool, a playful nature, and a smile. The group will talk about railroads and their history. We will explore railroad folklore and stories. We will play theater and storytelling games to develop character and setting. We will select a story and develop it as an oral narrative, using our voices, our bodies, our knowledge, and our imaginations to create a good, tellable story. We will learn storytelling tools and coaching techniques to help us work together. These narratives will be presented at Wachusett Greenways Family Fun Day on June 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and some may also be shared at the Springdale Mill Celebration on the Rail Trail on September 27 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. This program is supported in part by a grant from the West Boylston Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
