Hikers
explored
the Central Mass Railroad
Culvert in Hardwick

Six
hardy hikers set out on a cold Friday in February to explore the Central Mass
Railroad bed in Hardwick. This section of the railroad was never completed
because of the impending construction of the Quabbin Reservoir.
Eventually, the railroad was diverted south to Ware. The group had a good
look at an impressive culvert under the railroad bed where the muddy brook
flows through. Thanks to Hank
Ouellette, group leader, the participants gathered information regarding this
section of the never completed railroad bed. The walk was followed by a
lunch at the Whistle Stop Restaurant, former Central Mass Railroad Depot,
located in Gilbertville. Participants included: Rosalie Corcoran,
Pauline Cloutier, Ida Nystrom, Bruce Pennino, and Viv Ouellette.

Wachusett
Greenways sponsored a snow shoe walk on the Audubon trail near Eagle Lake in
Holden on February 20, 2007. Ida Nystrom organized and led the walk through
the three miles of loop trails in this new sanctuary. Pictured above are only
half of the group that signed up for the walk. The temperature was a balmy 45
degrees compared to about 15 degrees the day before.
The
Bancroft Students helped clear a field near Trout Brook in Holden on February
28, 2007.
This field is groomed by the Wachusett
Greenways to maintain a natural habitat for birds and other animals especially
during winter.
