WACHUSETT GREENWAYS
WINTER ACTIVITIES
Cross Country Skiing
on the Mass Cenral Rail Trail

Wachusett Greenways hosted a cross-country ski tour at Rutland State Park on Saturday, January 27.
The snow was soft and fluffy and the sun was shining as we explored a short section of the
Midstate Trail, then skied the bed of the future Mass Central Rail Trail. Peter Taylor shared
a detailed map of the park, and led the adventurers safely along the route. We passed through a
cut in Muddy Pond and stopped at a carefully constructed stone culvert with a missing top. After
enjoying hot chocolate, cookies and good company, we skied the return route along the rail bed to
the park road. We finished, tired but contented, at noon.
Paticipants of this ski event were: Sherron Carson, Arnold Gaskin, Vivianne and Hank Ouellette,
Joan Orton, Colleen and Jim Abrams and Peter Taylor.
Snowshoeing Party on the Mid State Trail, Barre, MA - February 4, 2001

The snowshoe group paused for this photo Bob Elms discussing animal tracks
Bob Elms and Bob Juckins conducted a snowshoe walk at the Barre Dam section of the Mid State Trail
on Sunday February 4. 2001 from 1:00 to 4:30 PM. The walk took us south on the Mid State trail and
then looped back to Barre Dam west of Rutland Road. We saw several types of animal tracks including
Moose and deer. There was evidence in the snow where moose had bedded down for a nap. Everyone had
a good time and a good workout. Conditions were quite favorable for the walk. We concluded the event
with hot chocolate heated on Bob's camp stove and with the oreo cookies, we got our energy back.
