Volunteer opportunities

In 2005, Wachusett Greenways marks its ten-year anniversary. The small band of volunteers who first shared a vision in 1994 to connect the Wachusett community with trails and greenways has expanded to include many new volunteers and members. In 1998, we welcomed 18 new members. Since then, more than 1,000 people have become Wachusett Greenways members, and another 1,000 have contributed funds to help build the Mass Central Rail Trail (MCRT). We’ve learned and grown by attending national conferences of rail trail advocates, connecting with municipalities and state agencies, becoming incorporated, recruiting members, soliciting donations, and building miles of rail trail. As of this writing, we have: • Enrolled 612 members in 2004 hailing from 80 different towns. • Constructed 10 miles of trail with three bridges in our planned 30 miles of the MCRT. • Raised more than $200,000 toward our goal of $250,000 for the MCRT Construction Fund. • Raised additional grant funding to construct the MCRT. • Received major donations of services from local businesses to construct the rail trail. • Enlisted the professional services of the towns of Sterling, West Boylston, Holden, and Rutland to carry out machine maintenance and construction on the trail. • Developed and dedicated the Springdale Mill Interpretive Site. • Published the Wachusett Greenways Map and Guide, annual reports, and regular Connector newsletters. • Hosted the first Golden Spike meeting and co-hosted Golden Spike II to help connect groups working on the MCRT between Boston and Northampton. • Grown to host more than 70 events annually. • Benefited from countless hours of volunteer service by Wachusett Greenways members. As we continue this journey, it’s time to celebrate our success! Plan to participate in the following and additional Greenways activities throughout 2005 and beyond.
