WACHUSETT GREENWAYS WINS NATIONAL TRAIL WORKER AWARD
American Trails Names Local Group Massachusetts’ Premier Trail Organization
HOLDEN, MA – March 25, 2009 – American Trails, a national, nonprofit
organization working on behalf of trails of all kinds, has named Wachusett
Greenways Massachusetts’ premier citizen trail development organization for
2008. As part of American Trails’ biannual National Trails Awards program,
Wachusett Greenways was recognized for "...its wide base of support in the
community and the construction of miles of rail trail at a fraction of the cost
of trails developed elsewhere."
National Trails Awards recognize the tremendous contributions of volunteers,
professionals and other leaders who are working to create a national system of
trails for all Americans. The prize honors successful efforts to influence
public policy relating to trail planning, trail protection, trail development or
maintenance. Each award recipient was honored as an "exceptional example of the
inspiring work being done within the trails community."
“Greenways is honored and excited to accept the National Trail Award on behalf
of the hundreds of volunteers who dedicate themselves to connecting the
Wachusett communities with trails and greenways,” said Colleen Abrams, Greenways
president. “And we are indebted to the state agencies and the towns we serve
along with regional foundations and businesses for their sustaining support of
this ‘labor of love’ we call Wachusett Greenways.”
American Trails supports local, regional, and long-distance trails and greenways
in backcountry, rural and urban areas. The organization’s goal is to promote the
nation’s trails by finding common ground and promoting cooperation among all
trail interests. Since its formation in 1988, American Trails has been involved
in everything from training trails advocates to increasing accessible trail
opportunities for persons with disabilities.
